The Ladies finished the season with a 4-1 win at London Wayfarers and in so doing wrapped up the Surrey Division 2 title. A win was needed to ensure that Surbiton, who we had beaten home and away, did not edge us out on goal difference, but after an edgy first half we found our touch and in the end we ended the season with some champagne hockey.
There was a full turnout, aside from the captain who had booked a cycling holiday in Spain, presumably in the expectation we would have polished things off by the end of March. Promotion had been secured a fortnight ago, but the title was just as important given some of the banter from Surbiton earlier in the season.
The first ten minutes were superb, with Wayfarers not able to get out of their own half, Philly causing repeated problems with her cutting runs and May’s pace on the right leaving the defence all at sea. Wayfarers’ keeper made some good saves, and the last line of defence held until a scrambled goal gave us the lead on ten minutes.
At that point we eased off and Wayfarers took their chance, and their pace left our backs slightly flat for a few minutes. We failed to clear a short corner and allowed Wayfarers to equalise, a deserved reward for five minutes of strong counterattacking.
We were back ahead six minutes later, a less crappy effort, but Goalie’s nerves were still being tested as we looked vulnerable on the counter. He must have been feeling it as for the only time this season he was almost silent. The first half ended with us desperately defending our 25 for the last five minutes and there was a suspicion had half-time not come when it did we would have conceded.
After the break we exploited Wayfarers’ midfield weaknesses better and started to take control, even though we needed a couple of interceptions by Rosie and Helen to prevent problems from the persistent counterattacks.
On 20 minutes a cross from the right was swept home by Philly from about six inches and the pressure visibly eased. Five minutes later came the fourth, and from then on we pushed the ball around with confidence and could have had two or three more. To their credit, Wayfarers kept battling to the end and never allowed us to relax too much.
The title was a deserved reward for a side whose training put the men to shame (even if its intensity left Rosie with a broken nose and Jax with black eyes) and who were a real pleasure to umpire and just be around all season. Back at TD beer gave way to champagne which gave way to snakebites …
