Season slowly grinds into life
The combined might of the Vets and the 3rd XI took on Spencer on Saturday in a friendly organised by Chris Bents. This was a notable match for OCs as for a pre-season game we had 14 players (nine vets + 19 twelfths (4 3rds and a 4th!) present and correct at the start time and so provided two rolling umpires and had a sub in hand.
Pre-match conversation mainly came from making introductions and the Vets saying "the oppo look a bit young" then we realised that this was not a Vets match. This became particularly apparent when the game started and Spencer romped into a 3 - 0 lead at half time in a game played at a breathless pace.
The half time conversation revolved around all of the players and subs saying " the oppo are a bit young and good " but agreeing that they would tire if we could just keep the ball and make them run around not us.
The fairy godmother waved her wand and in the second half OCs imposed themselves on the tiring Spencer side and the half was narrowly lost 3 - 4 with our goals coming from Ross Alexander, Jon Gray and Stuart Sleeman who became joint top scorers for the season even if only briefly. Andy Eve
