John Hothersall dies aged 72

We are sad to report the death of John Hothersall on March 11 at the age of 72. John was a stalwart of the lower sides for more than two decades, and was one of the first regular non Old Cranleighans to play for the club - like his son, Myles, he was an Old Georgian. John was once famously sent off for addressing an umpire in latin. Having been chopped remorselessly by a rustic forward, John complained to the umpire who told him to get on with the game. Displaying his classical education, John replied (in latin) "We who are about to die salute Caesar". The umpire, obviously not a classicist, took umbrage and red carded John for foul language.
